High above the clouds of western Quảng Trị, where mist lingers between old forest canopies, lies Pa Thiên – Voi Mẹp Peak – the wild heart of Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve.
At more than 1,700 meters above sea level, this twin mountain range isn’t just the highest point of the province – it’s where adventurers come to test their limits and fall in love with beauty of Vietnam’s untouched highlands.
1. Where is Pa Thiên Voi Mẹp located?
📍 Pa Thiên Voi Mẹp lies in Hướng Phùng commune, Hướng Hóa district, near the wind farm fields of Hướng Tân and the border region with Laos.
This area belongs to Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve, one of Vietnam’s richest biodiversity zones. It’s home to rare flora, wildlife, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
2. Overview of this trekking route
According to the project, the Pa Thiên – Voi Mẹp trekking eco-tourism product has two tour programs. The 2-day 1-night tour with a route of 6.5 km takes visitors from the forest gate through the new rock field, Pa Thiên peak and conquers Voi Mẹp peak. The 3-day 2-night tour has a route of 8.8 km, also departing from the forest gate and ending at Voi Mẹp peak, but the journey is longer, suitable for visitors who want a more complete experience.
Both tours depart from Hướng Phùng commune, passing through three sub-areas of Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve. To ensure safety and quality of experience, each tour only welcomes a maximum of 25 guests, limited to no more than two groups per day.
The distance from Pa Thiên peak to Voi Mẹp peak is about 1 km. To explore Voi Mẹp, visitors must stay overnight in Pa Thiên; the next morning around 9am, when the fog clears, start going down the mountain about 500m and then climb back up to reach the roof of Quảng Trị.
Difficult level:
The trek is rated as moderate to difficult. Hikers should be prepared for steep slopes, slippery roots, occasional stream crossings, and sudden weather changes due to elevation changes.

3. Highlights of Pa Thiên Voi Mẹp trek
3.1. The beauty of wild nature
Hidden deep within the Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve, the Pa Thiên – Voi Mẹp trekking trail leads you into a world where nature remains wild and pure.
The vegetation changes with altitude:
At lower slopes, lush tropical forests thrive with towering dipterocarp trees, thick vines, and layers of ferns. As you ascend, the landscape transforms into subtropical mountain forests filled with rhododendrons, moss-covered trunks, and bamboo groves whispering in the wind. During the spring, wild orchids bloom in vivid colors, painting the forest with many colors.

The wildlife is just as rich and fascinating:
Trekkers might catch glimpses of colorful butterflies, songbirds, and rare native species that call these mountains home. The quiet observer may even hear the distant calls of squirrels or civets moving through the undergrowth – reminders that this is a living sanctuary.
The air is cool and crisp, scented with the freshness of rain-soaked earth. Mist weaves gently between the trees, softening every sound and creating a dreamlike atmosphere. It’s a place where you can feel time slow down, where every breath connects you back to nature’s rhythm.
Here, the beauty of Pa Thiên – Voi Mẹp lies not in luxury or comfort, but in its raw authenticity – a rare wilderness that awakens both the spirit of adventure and the quiet wonder of discovery.
3.2. Panoramic mountain views when reaching the top
Reaching the Voi Mẹp summit, you’ll be amazed by one of the most breathtaking panorama view in Central Vietnam. From this point – over 1,700 meters above sea level – the world seems to stretch endlessly in every direction.
To the east, the green valleys of Hướng Phùng tretch out under a thin layer of mist, dotted with many giant wind turbines turning slowly in the breeze. To the west, the mountains of Laos rise and fade into the horizon, their peaks glowing softly under the warm morning sunlight.
As the clouds drifted slowly across the sky, the scenery changes by the minute – one moment bathed in sunlight, the next wrapped in the fog. Standing here feels like you can touch the sky.
No photo can truly capture the magic of this place. You simply have to stand there, at “The Roof of Quảng Trị,” and feel the vastness of it all.

3.3. Local culture & responsible tourism
One of the most special parts of the Pa Thiên – Voi Mẹp trekking journey is meeting the Vân Kiều ethnic people, who have lived for generations in the mountains of western Quảng Trị. They will be your supporters – not only showing the safest paths through the forest but also sharing stories, legends, and their deep connection with nature.

Each tour is designed with small groups (under 25 participants) to minimize environmental impact, ensuring that nature stays as pristine as it was found.
By joining this trek, travelers don’t just conquer a peak/mountain – they help support the community and preserve one of Vietnam’s most unspoiled natural treasures.
