Ta Con Airport, located in Tan Hop commune, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, stands as a reminder of the Vietnam War. Situated near Khe Sanh town and the Lao Bao International Border Gate, the airport is easily accessible by road.
The site preserves remnants of the 20th century’s most powerful military force, including aircraft and tanks used in the Battle of Quang Tri. Visiting Ta Con Airport offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by the Vietnamese army and people.
In 1964, General Westmoreland recognized the strategic importance of Khe Sanh, similar to Dien Bien Phu. The US military established a base there to impede the Vietnamese army’s movements along the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Ta Con Airport: From Fortress to Relic
The U.S. military envisioned Ta Con Airport as an impregnable fortress, but it marked the beginning of critical strategic missteps. Rather than shielding the invaders, Ta Con became a prime target for the Vietnamese army.
Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the airport resembled a basin, vulnerable to the relentless assault of the Vietnamese forces. From February to July 1968, during the Khe Sanh Campaign, the site echoed the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. After 170 days of intense combat, the U.S. military command ordered a withdrawal from Khe Sanh on June 26, 1968, marking the campaign as a masterclass in Vietnamese military strategy.

More than fifty years later, Ta Con Airport stands as a symbol of reflection. The remnants of war—cold iron relics—have been overtaken by green grass, embodying resilience and reconciliation.
Today, Ta Con Airport is an open-air museum and a key attraction on the DMZ tour, drawing visitors to witness a pivotal chapter in Vietnam’s history.
